What CRCST Certification Is, and How to Register

CRCST is the front door of HSPA's sterile-processing credentials — the one most techs earn first, before the association's advanced certifications. Holding it says one thing cleanly: you have demonstrated the core knowledge and hands-on competence of central service work against a national standard, not just on-the-job familiarity.

What the credential is not: it is not a degree, not a training program, and not a state licence. You do not enrol in “CRCST” the way you enrol in a course. You prepare — through experience, self-study, or an employer's program — and then you sit one exam that HSPA owns. What that exam covers is the seven content domains laid out in the CRCST study guide.

If you have seen the name IAHCSMM on older study material, that is the same organisation. In 2021 the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management rebranded to the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA). Same body, same certification, new name — the credential was CRCST before the rename and it is CRCST after it.

That is why an “iahcsmm crcst practice test” and an “hspa crcst practice test” are asking for exactly the same thing, and why older links still point at iahcsmm.org. The current official home is myhspa.org.

Getting CRCST-certified is a path, not a single test day. At a high level it runs in four moves — and every exact figure attached to them (fees, the experience requirement, deadlines, exam windows) is set by HSPA and confirmed on myhspa.org, not here.

Because CRCST is a certification rather than a licence, for most techs it is technically voluntary — no government agency issues it, and no one revokes a right to work by pulling it. In practice, though, it behaves like a baseline: many hospitals and surgical centres require it (or require you to earn it within a set window of hire) for sterile-processing roles.

The requirement is also spreading in law. A small but growing number of US states now mandate that sterile-processing technicians hold a recognised certification as a condition of employment, and more introduce bills each session. That trend is real and worth watching — but because the specific states change as legislation passes, do not rely on a list you read once. Check the current situation for your own state, and note that these laws require certification, not a state-issued licence.

CRCST is not the only sterile-processing certification. The main alternative is CSPDT — the Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician credential from a different body, CBSPD. Two organisations, two separate exams; most candidates sit one or the other, chosen mostly by what their employer or state recognises.
